His start in acting is pretty interesting. After a casting director spotted a picture of him in GQ, he was cast on the comedy series Happy Days as Roger Phillips. Just a few years later he would be cast in The Love Boat. Jill Whelan is a child actor known for her role as Vicki Stubing. In the mid-1980s, in Los Angeles, having returned from England and with The Love Boat series coming to an end, Whelan moved to New York City and worked as an event producer at Madison Square Garden where she helped set-up acts. In 1999, Whelan left acting and started working as an investigative producer/ Lauren Tewes was cast for the role of cruise director Julie McCoy, selected from more than 100 actresses who auditioned. She starred in the third and final pilot of the show, cast the day before production began on the RMS Queen Mary in San Pedro. In 1984, after seven seasons, Tewes was replaced on The Love Boat after a highly public battle with cocaine addiction, which she eventually overcame. Pat Klous portrayed Judy McCoy, the sister and successor of Tewes' character as cruise director. This occurred when Lauren Tewes was replaced and released from the show. She remained with the series until it ended in 1986. Klous retired from acting in 2002. Ted Lange is known for his role as the ship's bartender, Isaac. In the early 1980s, following a letter of recommendation from Lynn Redgrave (who he met on an episode of Love Boat), Lange attended a summer school at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art to perfect his Shakespeare acting skills. After he left the show in 1987, Lange appeared in various films and guest roles on 227, The Cleveland Show, Glitch!, Evening Shade, Scrubs, Drake & Josh, The King of Queens, Boy Meets World, Psych and Are We There Yet?. Fred Grandy played purser Burl "Gopher" Smith. He also wrote several vignettes for the show. In 1982, while visiting Turkey to film scenes for the show, Grandy suffered severe burns when a balloon filled with hydrogen exploded. Grandy later ran for Congress, serving four terms as Iowa's congressman. Later, he served as the CEO of Goodwill before returning to entertainment in recent years. Bernie Kopell's role as Doc was parodied in many shows and films, and multiple times on The Late Show with David Letterman. After The Love Boat, Kopell was so recognizable that he was not in roles often without a nod to his famous role. Gavin MacLeod played Captain Stubing, which earned him three Golden Globe nominations. He remains active in theater, acting, television, and radio. During his time as the Captain on The Love Boat, MacLeod "very selfishly" (his words) divorced his wife Patti. She then spent the next three years seeking help from psychiatrists on both the West and the East coasts. The couple divorced in 1982, but remarried in 1985. During the mid-1980s, MacLeod and Patti became Evangelical Protestants and credit their faith for bringing them back together. Like this content?
